The great thing about the internet is the way that it exposes us to stuff we might never have discovered otherwise. We get to listen to all the great film music on the web, we can download movies in an hour that would be impossible to find on DVD, and we can do it all with the click of a mouse.
Here’s some of the great film music on the web…
Sixty Seconds to What?
The final showdown piece from “For a Few Dollars More”. This is the finale version of the pocket watch theme. If you haven’t seen the film yet, you’ve never seen music used in a movie quite like this. The villain carries a musical pocket watch. When the song finishes, he draws and shoots his victims. When Lee Van Cleef and the baddie finally have their shootout, this piece of music comes in again in full symphonic layers and gives us one of the greatest standoffs in western film history.
The Joker Suite from The Dark Knight
The Joker Suite took a lot of influence from German “Krautrock” of the 1970’s. Krautrock was a blanket term used to describe the bizarre, experimental Rock and Roll being produced by groups like CAN and Neu! at the time. These guys were nuts, and the Joker Suite is even nuttier, attempting to capture the same paranoid, frantic energy as Ledger’s performance in a nine minute composition. Unconventional instruments, such as razor blades and ball peen hammers, were used to create this bizarre mix of sound to accompany a bizarre character.
Don’t Box Me In
From the soundtrack to Rumble Fish. Steve Copeland, the drummer from The Police, ventured into film composition lobbying for the job of creating a soundtrack to Coppola’s offbeat masterpiece. The result was an eerie, nostalgic and almost schizophrenic sounding percussion heavy score for an equally unique film. Don’t Box Me In, the one vocal track from the film, showcases Copeland’s unique singing style as well as his incredible gift for percussion.
